A final year student of Jackie Promos in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti region has been given several lashes by the headmaster for giving her jacket to a male colleague who was penalized.
The grandfather of the 18-year-old girl, Mr. Ofosu, who confided in The Chronicle said the headmaster gave her several lashes of the cane, thus causing harm to Mary, a third year student of the school.
As narrated to him, the headmaster seized the Cardigan of one male student and instructed him to go for his school uniform, leaving the boy bare-chested.
When Mr. Donkoh left the scene, Mary’s friends pleaded with him to lend her Cardigan to the distressed boy to enable him to cover his half-nakedness, till he finds his school uniform as instructed.
On seeing the boy in another Cardigan, Mr. Donkoh approached the students around to enquire who gave the boy the Cardigan, but nobody owned up. As a result, he summoned all students present to further enquire about who helped the boy with the Cardigan. Fearing they might be punished collectively, a boy pointed at Mary, following which the rest were freed.
Mary was then asked to hold onto a pillar, as the headmaster caned her until she suffered bruises all over her back. She reported the assault to her parents who lodged a complaint of brutal assault with the police.
The Chief Inspector in charge of the Jachie police station last Saturday issued the assault victim with a police medical form to seek treatment, while investigations continue.
Mary was writhing in pain, hence her inability to personally write a statement to the police immediately.
